Not that I expect any sympathy from anyone, especially when in January I was lying outdoors without so much as a sweater beneath this sky, but our overnight LOW was 80 degrees, and when I opened the patio door last night at 11:30 to let the dog out for her final constitutional of the day, it was like walking into a furnace, or standing in front of a space heater. All I could think about was how people all over the world live in this heat without the comforts of air conditioning, and I told myself to get over the complaining.
At 11:30 last night I was still waiting for the husband to get home from work. He’d left the house about 18 hours before. It was one of those days for both of us. I have been used for so long to having him in another room, or no more than an IM or text message away, and I gotta say it’s hard getting used to the change. I’ve been known to sit in the backyard and text him or IM him from my phone with a plot question. He has then been known to either type back, call me, or walk outside for a break. Yes, we’re geeks.
Anyhow, since he’s gone, I’m having to fill in as gardener, and I’m not doing such a great job. Not my fault he says, just the plants we ended up with and their hardiness or not. The mini tomatoes are doing great, but the striped ones are going to be worthless we fear. The other two plants are putting out some nice ones - as long as we get to them before the bugs and birds do. At least we’re not losing our plants to snow like some people! I plucked the last of the peppers today, and yesterday cleaned up and stored the onions. I love our onions. They are so crisp and sweet. For Wednesday’s lunch, I had a BOT, subbing onions for lettuce since we had none, and it was just the best!
Be sure and check out Devon’s post today at Access Romance’s Readers Gab! It’s a fun one where she does a romance novel riff on common memes, saying:
I found myself compiling mental lists, most of which revolve around that fantasy/reality disconnect that we find in even the most ‘realistic’ of romance fiction. Since I can’t wrap my mind around any one thing, I present a hodgepodge of some things I’ve been pondering. It’s a takeoff on the “four things” meme that pops up periodically

That’s a pretty pic. It looks like a still life painting.

by Alison June 5th, 2008 at 2:50 pmIt was 77 at 5:00 am in Nashville this morning. I don’t think it is supposed to get any cooler in the next 7 days either. The 7 day forcast showed 7 days straight of 90+ temps. It seems a little early for this type of heat to me.
by Liza June 5th, 2008 at 3:07 pmLiza, I agree. It’s way too early to be hitting 97, etc.! I can deal with it in August and September, but give me my fantasy of a cool summer in June!
by Alison June 5th, 2008 at 3:15 pmWe could use a little of your heat in the Pacific Northwest.
by Estella June 5th, 2008 at 4:24 pmWe could use some of that warmth here as well. My furnace ran off and on all night - because it was so cold. Got up this morning to 7C (44F) and the forcast that today was going to be our best weather, since we are headed back into the rain, wind and clouds. Our temperature is sittin at 20C (68F) right now, and this has been our warmest all week. The rest of the week is forcast to be in the 50’s.
There is nothing to compare to the taste of fresh veggies from the garden. They are so good
by Cryna June 5th, 2008 at 4:47 pmHey, I’m more than happy to share with you guys!
by Alison June 5th, 2008 at 4:53 pmIt was in the 60s here yesterday. I absolutely loved it. But, then again, winter is my favorite season. We’re back in the 80s today and it’s supposed to stay there for a while before getting hotter. It’s been rather mild this year, though, since we usually have a couple days of 90s in May.
