Getting ready for a good year of reading!

After Christmas, I always go into Amazon and suss out the next year’s books by my auto-buy authors. Sometimes I’ve got Amazon gift cards to spend, and I love later in the year to have the books show up when I’m not expecting them!

Here are the ones I’ve already bought.

1) From Robyn Carr: Caught Harlan CobenAngel’s Peak, Feb

2) From Robyn Carr: Moonlight Road, Mar

3) From Harlan Coben: Caught, Mar

4) From Lisa Gardner: Live To Tell, Jul

5) From Tess Gerritsen: Ice Cold, Jul

6) From Kristan Higgins: The Next Best Thing, Jan

7) From Laura Kinsale: Lessons In French, Jan

8) From Pamela Clare: Live To Tell Lisa GardnerNaked Edge, Mar

9) From Nora Roberts: The Search, Jul

10) From Sandra Brown: Tough Customer, Aug

11) From Connie Willis: Blackout, Feb

12) From Joshilyn Jackson: Backseat Saints, Jun

13) From Jodi Picoult: House Rules, Mar

Anyone else pre-order months in advance? I couldn’t find a new Michael Connelly for 2010, which leaves poor Harlan Coben as the only male author in the list. I’m too far behind in Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series to justify bying more of those until I catch up. Dennis Lehane doesn’t write fast enough, and what he’s writing these days isn’t the same as the brilliant Mystic River or Shutter Island (can’t wait for the movie), though I did buy The Given Day. I tend to read more thrillers than anything (though that’s not obvious from the list above), but not all male authors work for me. Hoag, Gardner, and Gerritsen are my faves, and I truly believe it’s because they started in romance and know how to add emotional depth in a way that’s intrinsic to the story. Plus, they just rock. So glad to have a new Hoag! Will also be waiting for the next Chelsea Cain!

I rarely pre-order…I have limited funds so that I need to shop very carefully with my book money. I luv coupons at borders and then ever 150 you spend you get $5 border bucks the next month…every penny counts. I do suggest books to my local library and they are pretty good about getting the new ones that are requested.

I can’t even remember the last time I bought a book in a store. I buy everything online except groceries these days, and even then, I order my coffee online! I know a lot of people who do take advantage of the Borders coupons. I’m so glad they’re available!

Nope I am not a pre-order kinda gal… I create a book fund or budget and am pretty selective each month on how I spend it… oh but how I would want to bring home more than I can…

Oh, I definitely spend more than I should. I could never buy another book and have trouble reading all the ones I own!

I hardly ever preorder but I go around authors website and Amazon to find out what’s coming out during the year and make a list that I carry everywhere so I don’t forget what’s coming out.

I also have a list of things to remember to check for. Like Michael Connelly and Chelsea Cain, heh. But I also keep a running Wish List at Amazon!

Isn’t she good? I’m behind on the series, but not so far that I can’t go ahead and buy this one!

I visit author, publisher and Barnes & Noble sites to keep a list of books I want. I do preorder, mostly through Barnes and Noble.

I worked in my college bookstore for a while, but had to quit. Most of my pay was going towards book purchases because of the lovely employee discount I received!

I think this is one of the best things about being an author, knowing what’s coming out from all sorts of publishers just because of networking!

I usually don’t preorder. Especially if it is months away.

I love pre-ordering. You don’t get charged till it ships, because I’ve had to change payment method many times, or even cancel pre-orders down the road when I’m out of cash, LOL!

I’ve never pre-ordered months in advance. I usually do it weeks in advance. I’m looking forward to Kristan Higgins’s new book, too. I first heard of her from you on this website a long time ago.

I have been known to accidentally REorder something because I’ve forgotten about the PREorder, but not too often. And Amazon tells you at the top of a book’s page if you’ve already purchased it, which is a reminder I’ve used often!

I tend not to pre-order months in advance, because I often forget and then order twice (doh!), although recently Amazon seems to be reminding me that I’ve already bought something, so maybe that will change.

I’m up to date with Lee Child, so he’s on my list, as is Robert Crais and Harlan Coben, plus Simon Kernick, but his books are quite ‘English’, so I don’t know how much international appeal they’d have. I’m disappointed that I can’t see anything new from JA Kerley yet.

I’ve never been able to get into a Crais, though I have a couple. I’ll keep trying. Not familiar with Kernick or Kerley!

I enjoy Crais’, although they can be a little uneven. The Cole/Pike series overall is good, though.
Kerley is fab, set in Alabama (I think), and very dark in places. Has a bit of a Karin Slaughter feel sometimes. It’s worth starting with the first, as it’s a series.
Kernick is an English writer, I have no idea if he’s even sold overseas, but as I said, I don’t think the stories would travel very well.
I have just pre-ordered the next Karen Rose, as a treat to myself, too!

I noticed the reminder thing recently, I think it’s quite a recent introduction on the .co.uk site.

I’ve read at least one Slaughter and liked it, so will definitely check out Kerley. Thanks for the rec!

I couldn’t find a new Michael Connelly for 2010 either, but you have to catch up on your Lee Child! Several of the most recent Reacher books have been great. Have you tried Greg Iles?
